<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Being original Dottes (Wyandotte County residents), we spend a lot of time in and around the Village West area. The large number of shops, restaurants, and entertainment opportunities keep us returning. This area seems to always be teeming with activity, but there are times we just want to grab a bite to eat without being surrounded by tourists. It's always nice to know that there are spots you can go, where the majority of the patrons will be local residents. One of these places is Danny's Bar & Grill.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The set-up is similar to many other places like this, and there are plenty of TV's to catch up on the latest sporting events. The bar is long and well stocked for those looking for liquid libations.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

T<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">he dining area is large enough to handle plenty of customers, and the seating is comfortable, although fairly utilitarian. Servers scurry around attending to their tables, and while we have seen reviews that complained about the service, we did not experience any issues during our visit.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">We dropped by on a Monday evening, which since we were before the football game the place was only partially filled. Of course as the evening passed the crowd began to assemble. Crystal chose the Fish & Chips dinner, which included cole slaw, fries, and a dinner roll. The fish had a good breading, and was light and flaky. The cole slaw is more on the tangy side than the sweet, and the flavor keeps you coming back for more. Her overall rating for the meal was a thumbs up. She also commented that the tarter sauce was unique in the higher level of relish in the mix, and she found it rather tasty.

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I went old-school and ordered the Country Fried Steak dinner, which includes gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetable, and a dinner roll. The over-sized cube steak comes with a good breading, but it was a little on the oily side. The amount of food is immense, and left me plenty to take home leftovers for lunch the next day. The mashed potatoes had a creamy texture, and the gravy was a flavorful accompaniment. The green beans were a good choice, and are cooked with onion and a little bacon to kick up the flavor.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"> Our visit was relaxing, and rather enjoyable on a cold winter evening. It was good to step away from the hustle and bustle, and just unwind over a dinner of comfort foods. Of course the Christmas shopping was not complete, so too soon we had to wander back out into the chilly evening. Perhaps soon we will get the chance to once again slow the pace with a quiet evening at Danny's bar & Grill. <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> On a cold winter's night we headed out the door to a holiday wine party. Since we were headed to the Crossroads area, we decided to stop for dinner on the way. It only seemed appropriate that we find a spot on the Boulevard, and we chose Ponak's Mexican Kitchen. This KC original has been in business for over 40 years, yet we were making our first visit, so expectations were running high.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> Being a Friday evening, there was obviously a wait, but it was not long. Besides we were dressed for the party (picture is a little farther into this post), so we became somewhat of a conversation starter. People around us were more than happy to discuss their favorite menu items, as well as talking about a wide range of other topics. This place has a very friendly vibe, so the wait passed quickly.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> Upon being seated we were served the standard chips and salsa, and the salsa was found to have a good kick. We decided to add some White Con Queso dip to the mix, as well as one of their signature margaritas. The queso was quite good, being creamy and flavorful, with a little spinach included. Their margaritas are strong, so be prepared for that. I'm not sure just how well someone would function, if they partook in a pitcher during their Happy Hour specials from 3 to 6 pm on Monday through Thursday.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> Our server was swamped with tables, but was prompt and attentive to our needs. Our orders were taken, and we worked on the chips and dips while we waited. It wasn't long before our plates arrived. Crystal ordered the Chicken Flautas meal(#18), which comes with the standard rice and bean sides. One of the reasons that I will refrain from ordering that particular item is that I usually find the flautas to be a little dry, as was the case with these as well. Her solution was to add a little queso to them, and she seemed quite pleased with her results. She is a rice lover, and found the side to be very run-of-the-mill, but still good.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I chose to take the advice of a 25 year Ponak's veteran's advice, and try out the Pork Burrito meal (#2). It comes with a taco, tostado, and the standard rice and bean sides. The taco and tostado were standard, but had a good crunch to the shells. This is a big thing to me, since I hate it when they fall apart on the first bite. The homerun came when I tasted the pork burrito. Smothered in cheese, and wrapped in a flour tortilla, I did not expect a lot from the filling, but I was pleasantly surprised. The pork is cooked with a delicious marinade that brings out the full flavor of the meat. The beans are my go-to side, and they were creamy, as they should be, and had a good amount of melted cheese.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Our first visit to Ponak's Mexican Kitchen will certainly not be our last, as there were a ton of other dishes I saw on the menu (as well as other tables) that piqued my interest. Of course, there is still a long list of place we haven't tried, and it is always exciting when we see and hear the excitement from the regulars at a location. In the meantime, if you want to learn more about Ponak's or have a gander at their menu, check them out at <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">http://www.<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">ponaksmexicankitchen.com/<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">. <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">While we enjoy going out as much as the next couple, we also savor the idea of a good deal. What is even better is when we happen upon it without being aware in advance. This is exactly what happened the other day, while we were out partaking in some retail therapy. <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">After a long morning of shopping, we had built up quite an appetite. We were in Overland Park, near 135th & Metcalf, so we did a quick search. I found a handful of options, and Crystal decided on Mexican, which led us to Ted's Cafe Escondido.<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"> We entered, and were seated immediately. Lauren, our server, came by and took or drink order, while delivering<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"> our first round of freebies. Besides the standard chips and salsa, this place includes cheese dip and warm tort<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">illas. Laur<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">en warned us that the tortillas were awesome, and she was correct. We had a visit from Jordan, the manager, who told us some background on the restaurant. He is originally from Oklahoma, where the chain began, and moved here when they opened up in the Kansas City area. They now have three locations in the metro, with two on the Missouri side.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"> I ordered the same taco, but added the Ground Beef Enchilada with Chili con Carne sauce, and a side of refried beans. We both noted the over-sized tacos, which had a good crunch to the shell. The Chili con Carne sauce had a slight sweetness to it, but was still flavorful. The beans are my go to staple, and did not disappoint.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The staff was extremely attentive, and we had a second visit from the manager. He checked on how we enjoyed our meal, and told us that we were in for another treat when the complimentary sopapillas were served. Not long after our dinner plates were cleared, another server delivered our sweet treats. The airy pillows were coated with cinnamon sugar, and we chose to drizzle ours with honey. They really topped off a great meal, and all of this for a very affordable price. This place was immediately added to our "return visit" status, so we could sample more of the menu options. <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"> Last weekend we were headed to North Kansas City to listen to the Ronni Ward Band (http://ronniwardmusic.com/) play at Christine's Firehouse. (I will have to remember to write a post about that place.) We were coming from another event, so we hoped to pop in and have some dinner while enjoying the tunes. When we got <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">there we found standing room only, so it was time for an alternate plan. After a short search we found a spot just a couple of blocks away, and made a quick dash over. Located at 323 Armour Road, Chappell's Restaurant & Sports Museum sounded like an interesting place to visit.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"> One of our favorite things about seeking out new settings is finding an iconic location you never knew existed. Now this doesn't happen everyday, so when it does happen it is special occasion. The outside reminded us more of an old hotel entrance, but once we entered we realized this place had history. Now when I hear museum associated with a restaurant, I expect that there will be a few showcases scattered about, which highlight the specific interest of the owner. That was probably the case about 20 years ago at Chappell's.
An added surprise was the sweet potato fries. Fried up crispy, they are served with a sweet and spicy chili dipping sauce that keeps you coming back for more. Needless to say we left without doggie bags, and headed off back to the live music event. <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The fries have to be ordered separately during HH, so by the time you do the math the combination saves you $1.00 over the regular menu. Still a dollar saved matters. A larger than standard cut give the fries plenty of body, but can be difficult to get correctly cooked. This place did it right, and they were crispy without being overcooked. The ketchup based dipping sauce was a good accompaniment.
I noticed a Cubano sandwich on the menu, which is my weakness, but I gathered my strength and went a different direction. Since the whole menu had a southern style vibe, I decided to hit up New Orleans, and ordered a Catfish Po' Boy. Hmm! The picture shows a Shrimp version, but that's not what I ordered. <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Now here's the Catfish Po' Boy that I was looking for. The sandwich is piled high with crispy, but a little salty, strips of fried catfish filets. It's topped with house made Cole slaw, as well as tomatoes and lettuce. It comes with hush puppies on the side, and includes some of the dipping sauce served with the fries. The sandwich was more than a person should eat, so I was only able to finish half. To be honest I had taken a bite of the Shrimp version earlier. Both types were good, but I still wonder about the Cuban. Oh well, perhaps on a subsequent visit.

A while back we visited a fast food restaurant in Blue Springs that focused on chicken strip dinners. We were both a little surprised at the concept, but evidently it is catching on. Recently we made our first stop at Zaxby's Chicken in the Village West are of KCK. Here we found another restaurant chain focusing on this narrow field of protein options. Since we were already there, we decided to try them out.

The menu is fairly straightforward, but has a surprising number of combinations to choose from. We took a moment to finally decide on our meals, and then placed our order. Like most fast food places, the focus is on quick turn time. Since we were in a hurry, we weren't too worried about the gourmet experience we were missing. We were both taken back a bit by the sheer number of calories allotted to their meals. It was a hefty price to pay for speedy service.

The dining area follows the lead of most any other fast food restaurant with a combination of table tops and booths. The service is set up so that a staff member will bring your meals to your table, which helps prevent congestion at the order counter.

We each ordered the four strip meal, which includes cole slaw, fries, and a piece of garlic toast. The chicken was a little bland, but had a good crust. The dipping sauce did add a smoky, peppery kick to the entree, and was a welcome addition. The fries are standard fast food fare, and the toast was saturated with butter, but lacking much garlic flavor. To me the winning part of the meal was the cole slaw. Crisp vegetables with a slightly sweet base is the style I grew up with. Overall Zaxby's Chicken is exactly what you would expect for fast food, and the prices are fairly standard for the amount of food they dish out. When you are looking for a party atmosphere in Kansas City you can usually rely on the Power & Light District to be a good venue. Recently they had their Halloween bash, which draws a ton of people in costume. Now we may not be the biggest party couple around, but we do savor the opportunity for some premium people watching. This certainly felt like the perfect chance to do some of that, while also enjoying a nice dinner out. The P&L is a great location to head when you are struggling with what you want to do. The district offers a wide variety of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and entertainment options. On this evening we decided to try a new restaurant for us, so we picked Leinenkugel's Kansas City.
Since this was our first visit, we hoped to find out a little about the background of this uniquely named restaurant. The host offered us a choice of low-top or high-top table, and proceeded to seat us right at the edge of the outdoor patio section. On a warm evening this was perfect, since we felt the air-conditioning, but had a view of the outdoors. Our server Alex arrived promptly and had a very upbeat attitude. When we asked about the unusual name, he explained that the company is an offshoot of the Leinenkugel Brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. This German family began the brewery in 1867, and is now being ran by the sixth generation of family members. Quite an inspiring story of family tradition. Our server went on to explain that many of the menu items are crafted with some of the beers that the brewery offers, especially where batters are involved. He gave us a few pointers on navigating the menu, and then left us to decide.
Now obviously beer is a huge draw at this location, but neither of us were in the mood for this particular beverage, so we passed. I did a cursory review of the drink menu, and found that they have over a dozen varieties on tap, and twice that many in bottles. They also offer a handful of beer cocktails and blends. Perhaps on a subsequent visit I may sample one of these, but for this evening we were drinking other concoctions. After a few minutes of deliberation, we decided on our selections. After placing our orders, we sat back to enjoy the evening. I wish I would have thought of taking a picture of the view from our table. We were seated at a low-top at the edge of the outdoor patio. This gave us a fantastic view of the outdoor seating area, which includes a fire feature. It certainly looks like a great location for a romantic dinner on a crisp evening.
The menu at Leinenkugel's Kansas City leans more toward the side of handheld foods. There are a few salad options, and most are fairly complex in the mix of ingredients. If you are stopping by for their weekday Happy Hours, which run from 3:00 to 7:00 Monday through Friday, you will find quite a few appetizer options. One of the more popular snack items is their Beer Battered Cheese Curds. We didn't try them, but they are supposed to be very good. If you have had the experience of tasting them, please leave a description of them in the "Comments" section below. As far as the full plate items go, there are a few varieties of street tacos, as well as a wide sampling of burgers and sandwiches to choose from. A handful of larger entree items round out the menu, and of course there are also a small group of desserts.
After a reasonable amount of time our dinners arrived. My wife had ordered the Chicken & Avocado sandwich, which comes on Ciabatta bread. The chicken breast is marinated and then grilled. It comes topped with lettuce tomato, avocado slices, Swiss cheese, and ranch dressing. The flavor was great, but the sandwich gets a little messy with all of those toppings. Of course, that didn't prevent her from finishing it off, but she had to stop periodically to realign. She chose the fries, as she almost always does. They were good, but nothing special. I had a few as well, and by the end of the meal her plate was cleared.
Now I had scoped out this restaurant in advance, and picked it because of one specific menu item. Whenever we try a restaurant I look for a Cuban sandwich. It is amazingly hard to find good ones being offered, and if you know of anyplace that has one, please tell me about it in the "Comments" section. I will be eternally grateful. I asked Alex if the one they served was good, and he said it is, but it is a little bit of a twist on the traditional recipe. The ingredients are roughly the same, but the mustard is not really spicy, so it does miss that kick. Still it was good, and the smoked pork was excellent. this sandwich is pressed, which did leave the edges of the bread a little tough. I almost always choose the onion rings for my side, so that we can share those and the fries. These were good and crispy, but the dipping sauce held little flavor. I would have preferred more kick here, as well.
Our overall impression was positive, and plans will be made to visit again. The fish and chips sound appealing, and we are interested in trying the homemade beer batter. The prices were reasonable, and the portions are certainly filling. Service was prompt, although we were there before it got too busy, but there were plenty of extra servers just waiting for the crowd to arrive. Everyone seemed friendly and helpful, and we had interaction with others beside our server. The ambiance inside the restaurant was a mix between bar and restaurant, and certainly made to be comfortable. As we stated at the beginning of this post, we made this visit for the annual Halloween Party. It was a great evening of people watching, and we saw many unique and inventive costumes. Of course there were the old standards, but we noticed a growing number of ideas based on social media. After dinner we wandered over to PBR Big Sky, a country music bar, and watched people attempt to ride the bull while in costume. This supplied us with lots of entertainment, and we had quite the night. We hope your Halloween was just as hauntingly wonderful.Jeff and Crystal Bryanthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03500918457038192884noreply@blogger.com01323 Walnut St, Kansas City, MO 64106, USA39.0980618 -94.582157839.098013800000004 -94.5822368 39.0981098 -94.5820788tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3658246220074522382.post-78002267543759722952016-10-31T04:21:00.000-07:002016-10-31T04:21:28.260-07:00Restaurant Review: Pizza Studio

The other day we found ourselves shopping at The Legends in western KCK. After a bit, we decided that we needed something to eat, but we weren't ready to leave the shopping center. While there are a few go to places we enjoy at this location, my wife was quick to point out that she had recently tried the new pizza spot called Pizza Studio. Her description piqued my curiosity, so we decided to have it for a quick lunch. It is the first restaurant that this chain has opened in the metro with the closest one from here being in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. A quick check of their website shows the majority of their stores are located in the southwestern portion of the country, but they do have a smattering of locations in other areas.
We arrived to find only a few guests inside, since we were early enough to miss the lunch rush. The menu is pretty simple to navigate. The first thing you will need to do is to pick a crust from their five options. Then you select a sauce from seven varieties. The cheeses offer another four options, and then you get to the toppings. Here they are broken out between veggies and meats, with plenty available in both categories. For those who have decision phobia, or are just looking for a quick suggestion, they offer a few "masterpieces" with some interesting flavor combinations.
After you have made your decision, the staff gets to work building your creation. You move down a counter watching the assembly process, and can interject with any last minute additions or subtractions that you deem appropriate. Once your pie is assembled it goes into the oven, which will cook it in about 3 to 5 minutes. While that is happening you get to make any other menu selections that you desire. There are a handful of pre-selected salad combinations available or you can just opt to build your own from their assortment of available options. On our visit we did not sample the salad choices, since the pizzas were larger than I had expected.
Once you have settled the bill, you get your drinks and find your seating. The dining area is well lit, with comfortable seats. There are table top and booth options, with the latter working well for us. The restaurant is large enough to handle a good number of customers, and I would imagine that being located on the outer portion of the mall allows for more to-go orders. In just a few short minutes our pies were pulled from the oven. A sprinkling of Italian herbs, and a brushing of garlic olive oil on the crust completes the pizza. Once cut and plated they are ready to be sampled.

This chain restaurant stands upon the premise of using the highest quality ingredients, in chef-driven recipes, to deliver an exceptional product. These are lofty goals, which can easily be lost in the hustle and bustle of building a chain. The true test of these standards are the flavors of the food that they serve. I was hesitant to expect anything more than a standard run-of-the-mill pizza joint offering, and I was pleasantly surprised. The crust I chose, which was the rosemary herb variety, imparted a slight herbal tone to the meal. The cheese, which is grated fresh daily, has a warm and buttery texture. The meats were bold and plentiful in every bite. We both enjoyed our choices, although my wife decided that next time she will opt for spinach to be added to her Chicken Alfredo pie. Pleasantly satisfied, as well as stuffed, we headed back to our retail therapy with the knowledge that we have located a great option for a quick, and quality lunch. To say that ice cream is one of our favorite treats is an understatement. It has, and I would imagine will always be, our go to dessert option. There is something decadent about the rich, creamy flavors. It is especially sinful the way that they infuse ribbons or chunks of candies, as well as other treats into the mix. Although there are many good shops across the metro, one of our favorites is a family owned shop called Sylas & Maddy's Homemade Ice Cream. The one we frequent is located at 119th and Strang Line Road in Olathe.
This small shop is one of two locations that we are aware of, with the other being their first location in Lawrence, Kansas. They opened that store in 1997, and followed with the Olathe store in 1999. Walking through the door, the first thing that you smell is a sweet combination of the fresh made waffle cones, and the creamy ice cream. We have found late afternoon visits are less crowded, and this place can get really packed on a weekend evening in the summertime. While it can be hectic, we look at it as an opportunity to review the offerings.
Speaking of options, Sylas & Maddy's has plenty to choose from. Whenever we visit there are grand plans of trying new and exciting flavors. These plans usually go out the window when we see some of our old standards. We have a couple of go-to flavors that we always seem to gravitate towards. I do plan to give every flavor a shot at some point, but not sure that my wife will strive for this same lofty goal. Unlike many other shops, this place makes their own ice cream with high quality ingredients. They do not skimp on the add-ins either. For example, their Coconut Cream Pie ice cream has an entire pie added into the bucket of ice cream. They want to make sure their customers get plenty of flavor from their choices.
If you feel your ice cream needs an additional kick you can opt for a sprinkling of gummy bears, nuts, chocolate chips or a variety of name brand candies. To help expand our horizons, but hopefully not our waistline, We have started ordering two scoops per visit. This allows us to select one of our standards, but to toss in a new variety. Of course the go-to flavor needs to be on the bottom, so that it is the finishing taste. We're sure plenty of you will understand that logic. We know that this process will mean that it will take more visits to be able to sample all of the varieties, but that's a sacrifice that we are willing to make for research purposes. By the way, they also sell hard-packed pints and quarts for those who want to enjoy the wonderful tastes at home. Sometimes you cannot judge a book by it's cover. In the case of restaurants this has been proven time and again. There have been many shows that feature small diners that people would drive past without a second thought. What they don't realize is that inside some of those locations you can find meals with lots of flavor. Such is the case with Suzie Q's Homestyle Cafe in Kansas City, Kansas.
This hole-in-the-wall diner is a mainstay for many of the workers along the K-32 corridor in southern Wyandotte County. The weekday starts at 6:00 for the customers looking for breakfast. My day job is located just a few blocks from the restaurant, and it is not uncommon to see people enjoying some of the menu items that they have carried out in Styrofoam containers.
Savory or sweet offerings pepper the breakfast menu, and are made fresh daily. The biscuits and sausage gravy is a popular item, and pairs well with their crispy hash browns. The lunch and dinner menus are just as extensive, and they have specials on most weekdays. Another popular lunch time choice is the cheeseburger, which also comes with your choice of potato based side. Each time I walk into the cafeteria at work I seem to find someone enjoying a menu item that I didn't know they served. Tacos, lasagna, and beef stew are some of the ones I have seen recently. They also offer fried and grilled chicken dinners, as well fish & chips, and fried catfish. Most of their dinners cost less than $10.00, and include salad, a vegetable, and a choice of potato or bread. So if you are looking for a home cooked meal, without all of the fancy stuff, then drop by Suzie Q's Homestyle Cafe for a meal that won't break the bank.

First impressions are positive.

We can remember the days when miniature golf courses dotted the city. A fun date night may involve pizza or burgers, and probably some activity. Mini-golf was always a prime possibility, because it was a game that anyone could participate in, no matter their skill level. Over time the novelty has worn off to the point that there are only a handful of these entertainment venues left in our area. Amazingly, if you head to a tourist based area, like Branson or Lake of the Ozarks, you will find that miniature golf still flourishes. So what are people who are looking for this type of entertainment in other regions to do?
These days there is a new golfing game in town, called Top Golf. Here they have chosen to create a new spin on the game in an effort to draw upon the desire of people looking for entertainment options. This isn't like miniature golf, since you do not use a putter. It also differs from regular golf, because you do not work your way around a course. Instead patrons pay to hit balls out of bays similar to visiting a range. As a matter of fact, it could best be described as a glorified driving range with special features.
The idea came form two brothers who wanted to better understand how close their shots were to the targets at their local practice facility. Their idea soon blossomed into the "sports club meets local hangout" places that exist today. I recently had the opportunity to visit our local site in Overland Park for an evening session. I was skeptical about whether it would be enjoyable, since I don't usually spend much time at driving ranges, but decided that it was a good chance to see for myself what all the buzz was about.
The Top Golf facility I visited is located at 106th & Nall in Overland Park, Kansas. The building has a very nice presence, and the high screen around the field is clearly visible when approaching their location. Upon entering you must first purchase a membership card for $5.00, which is good from then on. This card is similar to ones you get at many arcades, where they load the value you purchased on it, and then you use it to pay for your game time. The card also is used to keep track of your scoring history, in case you become a frequent visitor. The site is first come-first served, so reservations are not necessary. They have over 100 bays located on 3 floors, so on most visits you will probably have no issue getting right in. They also tout a rooftop terrace for viewing and relaxing. TV sets hang throughout the facility with sports shows on tap, so you can stay up-to-date on all of your sports teams and players.
To add to the atmosphere of a local hangout, they also offer interesting eats, as well as a wide variety of drink options. They have a good selection of appetizers to get started, and the calamari is delicious with it's sesame orange chili dipping sauce. Flatbreads and sliders, as well as a few varieties of burgers and handhelds, make good food options during a game. They even offer a couple of salad options, and I saw a few people enjoying some sweet desserts. The food prices are about what you would find at a sit down restaurant, which is not surprising for a specialty location. As for drink options, they have a full service bar, with quite a few signature drinks. These have a price a range of $8.00 to $11.00 each. They also offer a wide selection of beers and wines. Servers take your orders and deliver the selections in a very timely fashion. Service is certainly high on the priority list at Top Golf.
So now that we have got all of our extras in order, it's time to start the game. Their system is based on using golf balls that have microchips implanted for tracking purposes. The targets all have readers, so when a ball makes contact it can accurately note the location for scoring purposes. Much like darts, there is a variety of games that can be played. During my visit, the group decided just to play the standard game, which simply scored by the distance of the target. When it was my turn, I picked a club from the selection offered, and stepped up to the mat. By the way, they have men's and women's clubs, as well as right and left handed. A wave of the club head over the sensor, and the machine dispensed a ball. There are rubber tees embedded in the mat for those times you want the ball raised up. The chart on the machine shows target placement and yardage, so you can select your appropriate club. Then you just swing away. If the ball lands in one of the target areas, the scoring screen will denote the spot, and the number of points earned. In the game we played points were increased for the longer the distance to the target.
The bays are outdoors, but offer cooling fans for hot days and heaters for cold days. L-shaped couches are located in each bay, along with a good sized table. There is easily room for about 6 adults per bay. After a short practice round, we were ready to start the competition. While the object was to track total scores, we soon found ourselves more interested in just tracking each shot. Some people would focus on accuracy, while others were more set on seeing how far they could hit the ball. We even had a couple who were determined to hit the ball out of the complex, but none were successful. At the end of the evening we all departed with plenty of fun stories, and smiles on our faces. Our group included people of every skill level, from beginner to seasoned veteran. It is safe to say that we were all able to engage in this activity on an even playing field. I believe those two brothers hit on a great idea, and may have created a great date night option. One of the tasks that comes with the cooler weather is the need to begin thinking about holiday purchases. It seems the older we get, the larger the list of people to buy for, which means the need to get creative on gifting. We certainly wouldn't entertain the idea of purchasing just any item for people on our list, because we want the gifts we do pick to hold a special meaning. For us it is a bonus when the gifts originate in Kansas City. There is nothing quite like giving a little piece of the heartland.
While there are a slew of Kansas City based products to choose from, at least some on our list will receive a package that originated at Velvet Creme Popcorn. Located in Westwood, which is just south of the WyCo/JoCo border, this business is a Kansas City icon. Started over 75 years ago, they pioneered the idea of putting flavored popcorn in tins. They started this tradition in 1954, and it is now mimicked by popcorn companies across the nation.

Their popcorn has become so popular that they do a large portion of their business as mail order. The tins, which originally were hand painted, now come in a wide variety of decorations. Local sports teams logos adorn many of the most popular, but they also are available with many holiday themes. Tins come in 2 gallon, 3 1/4 gallon, and 6 1/2 gallon sizes, and can be single flavor or a mix of two or three flavor choices. With six flavors to choose from, everyone will be able to enjoy their favorite.

The options don't end with popcorn, as Velvet Creme also offers candy and snack options. From the beginning of the company's history they have offered fudge, and today's version is a delight to the taste buds. Don't stop there, as there are other chocolate and various candy products. They offer an assortment of nuts and trail mix style snacks, and some of these are also available in tins suitable for shipping. With all of these choices it should be easy to find gifts for everyone on your shopping list. We always enjoy shopping in the Westport area on town. It holds some one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques. Located in a nearly 100 year old building, Pryde's Old Westport is chocked full of items to hold your interest, and spark your creativity. On about any day, except Sundays, this place is packed with shoppers looking for a unique addition to a collection or an interesting gift idea. Now Pryde's hasn't always been the tenant in this building, but they have been since the late 1960's.
A rainy day is a great time to spend hours wandering the store perusing the inventory. If you are in search of cookware or dishes you will find an almost unending supply. Fiesta ware has seen a recent resurgence, and Pryde's carries more variety than about any place we can think of in the metro. If you are looking for bakeware they have just about any and every style of pan imaginable. They also carry a wide range of cutlery and utensils, some of which are hard to even imagine a use for, but clearly other more capable cooks are in the know.

While all of those items would fill most any kitchen supply store, Pryde's inventory doesn't stop there. As you wander the store you will also find aprons, pot holders, and linens. Coffee items, including presses, grinders, and makers are plentiful. You may also be in the mood for jams, jellies, spreads, and other food treats, and there are many types to be found. Some of these are local brands, which is great to see.
With all of this wandering it is easy to work up an appetite, but don't worry they have you covered. In the back of the shop you will find Ashleigh's Bake Shop. This little bakery serves up sweet treats to customers on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays. Their pies are baked fresh daily, and their choice of quality ingredients are evident in the flavor.

A lot of our posts are focused on the fine eats that can be found around our region, but like most we also appreciate a good dessert now and then. In the past few years we have seen a resurgence in the popularity of cakes. A lot of this has been due to the pop-up bakeries focusing on specialty cupcakes. Recently a new twist has been added to the mix, bundt cakes. When we hear the term we immediately think about the delicious treat that our moms would create using that weird looking round pan.

Nothing Bundt Cakes has decided to capitalize on this trend, and has spread throughout the nation, including three locations in the Kansas City metro. This sweet treat producer was started by two women in 1997 to produce cakes for their friends and family. As the popularity grew they realized that this hobby could become a successful business.
The decision to use fresh eggs, as well as real butter and cream cheese has allowed them to offer a product with consistent taste. By choosing not to compromise on ingredients, they had found a recipe worth repeating. They offer bundt cakes in 8" or 10" sizes, and even have tiered cakes for serving larger numbers. They can be decorated in a wide range of themes, which should fit almost any occasion.
Of course, some people may only want a small portion of cake, and Nothing Bundt Cakes has that taken care of, as well. They sell bundtlets, which are a cupcake size version of their cakes. They also have bundtinis, which are bite size portions, but with all of the flavor of the regular cakes. All of their cake sizes come in nine different flavors, so everyone can pick the one that they want. Kansas City BBQ can be found almost everywhere in the metro. We've seen the small dive restaurants, the gas station stops, and now we will look at a house converted into a BBQ mecca. Located on the fringe between Johnson and Wyandotte counties you will find Woodyard BBQ. Heading east from Nigro's Western Store on Merriam Lane, you are surrounded by commercial businesses when suddenly a couple of residences appear. On closer inspection you realize that the house on the south side of the street is actually a BBQ joint.

More signage.

As you make your way through the property you find yourself reading the large assortment of hand made signs. There are signs about the hours of business, and signs giving directions, as well as signs about some of the celebrity guests that have visited the restaurant. It seems that Kansas City is as famous for BBQ outside of the region, as it is around the Midwest.
The menu at Woodyard's is fairly straightforward. They offer up the usual BBQ items, as well as wings, and a killer burnt end chili. You can also purchase some of the items by the pound, if you want to have lunch for the week. Besides the standard sandwiches, they also have a few specialty handhelds worth noting. The Triple "P" will set you up with ham, pulled pork, bacon, and provolone cheese. The Carolina gives a nod to the East coast style BBQ served with pulled pork and topped with cole slaw.
Many patrons will gravitate towards the burnt ends, and Woodyard will give them a reason to keep coming back. Packed with smoked flavor, these delicious bites of meat are soaked with sauciness. The fries are thinner than the usual steak-cut you find at most BBQ joints, but the crispiness helps overcome that shortfall.
As I've said on many occasions, we judge BBQ restaurants by their ribs. Woodyard has a decent smoke ring, and good flavor. The meat is not as tender as some places, but the ribs are meatier than a lot of the competition. The baked beans and cheesy corn are really good, so be sure to grab some. There is an assortment of seating options, indoors and out, and if you prefer you can watch the pit master at work while you eat. The smoke is thick in the yard, and adds to the down-home BBQ ambiance. This is certainly one of the top BBQ joints in the metro. The other day I had just finished a round of golf at Sunflower Hills. I was talking with some of the guys in the clubhouse, when the topic of good Mexican food restaurants came up. Without hesitation they both directed me to El Potro Mexican Cafe and Cantina. As I had never heard of it, their quick and certain response told me that I needed to add it to our wish list. Once on the wish list, we attempt to make an excuse to visit locations for a chance to see first hand what the buzz is about. I try to keep a wish list for restaurants, shops, festivals, and a general entertainment/fun stuff category.
This Bonner Springs, Kansas eatery is a little out of the way, but that has not kept the public from finding them. Our visit was on a Sunday morning in between breakfast and lunch times. Yes, I said breakfast. On Saturdays and Sundays they serve breakfast options from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. Of course, on our visit we were looking for lunch, but we did make note of this early meal option. My wife commented about the possibility of trying their breakfast burritos. With their close proximity to the golf course, I can probably talk her into joining me, if I tempt her with a promise of stopping by this restaurant afterwards.
When we arrived we were the first to be seated in the front dining room. It looks like most of the breakfast crowd were seated in the area closer to the bar. It wasn't long before we were joined by more groups, and by the time we left the parking lot was getting active. The seating area is decent sized, and they have the tables spaced far enough apart to give patrons room to move without bumping chairs, This is a little thing, but one we truly appreciate. Staff was quick to attend to us, and actually very attentive. At one point I noticed our table wobbled a little, so I headed to the bar area to ask for a coaster. By the time I returned our server had already remedied the situation, and done so with a smile.
One of the things my wife was wanting on this particular visit was some queso dip. Much to our surprise this is served along with the chips and salsa, which at most restaurants is an extra charge. The queso was warm and delicious, and was served with light and crispy chips. The chips were probably made in house, as they were too thin to be easily transported. This style of chip is an added bonus, as it doesn't outweigh the dips. We were a little disappointed in the salsa, which was not at all spicy, and had an almost tomato paste taste. Still we give the pre-dinner offerings a thumbs up.
For meal choices my wife selected the Chicken Ranchero Chimichanga. This chicken stuffed, deep fried rolled tortilla is served with a ranchero sauce. They offer beans and rice for sides, but she always forgoes the beans in favor of extra rice. She enjoyed the flavor of the main course, and found the ranchero sauce added extra flavor to the meal. I rely on her for an opinion of the rice, as it is not my favorite side. She found it very good, and gives it a positive review.

I struggled picking just one meal, as the offerings can almost be overwhelming. There were so many good sounding dishes, but I finally settled upon the Faluta De Pollo Ranchero. The main dish is a flavored pork rolled inside corn tortillas, and served with sour cream and guacamole. For sides I went with the rice and refried beans. There are three different styles of beans to select from, so this place is all about giving options. The flautas were crunchy and delicious. The toppings were plentiful enough for all three of my rolls, and still allowed some to share. The beans were average, but do come with some melted cheese on top.

Overall we were very pleased with our first, and certainly not the last visit. Of special note is that this place also has drive-thru option, which we found very interesting for a sit down restaurant. The prices are very appealing, and we were able to enjoy our lunch for less than $16.00 before tip. We aren't sure what it is about BBQ and gas stations in Kansas City, Kansas, but it seems to be working out well for those looking for good eats. We all know of the one that gets national attention, but did you realize there is a second one that offers up its own variety of down home cooking? Roscoe's isn't much to see from the outside, and the inside is laid out like most any other small restaurant. Of course people don't come here for the ambiance, they are coming in search of great BBQ. Fortunately, they have picked a good location to end their search. Like many other BBQ restaurants, Roscoe's got their start by participating in cook-off contests. This seems to be the tried and true method to hone your skills. Now they spend their weekdays serving up their offerings to hungry customers.
You can almost judge a good BBQ joint by the smell when you get out of your vehicle. When you arrive at Roscoe's you know they have the makings for some high quality smoke. The food carries that smoky flavor throughout the menu. Their molasses based sauces give a little twang to the taste, which is a welcome change from the usual Kansas City style sauces. Their sandwiches are piled high with tender, delicious tasting meats. The fries are just standard frozen crinkle cuts, but they aren't any worse than most places. The Cole Slaw has a dill based taste, which is different that what you find in most KC restaurants.
The ribs are how we judge a BBQ restaurant, and this place has certainly hit a home-run here. The meat is fall off the bone tender, and the flavor fills your mouth. They have the skill to make a good smoke flavor without drying out the meat, so every bite is juicy. The Slow Cooked Beans have chunks of burnt ends, which impart that smoky flavor to the dish, and help cut some of the sweetness of the sauce. The Cheesy Corn is not a side I am accustomed to, but it had good flavor.
The overall experience was good, and the meats are over the top. The prices are in the normal BBQ range with a slab of ribs costing around $17.00. You can order meats by the pound or the have a couple of dinner specials. For the family plan they have some family platters that will run you about $10 to $12 per person, if their estimates are correct. We find that you can hunt and pick through the menu and build a good family dinner for about the same per person price. Be aware that their limited hours means that they are likely to run out of items by dinner time, so it's best to plan accordingly. Sometimes when you happen upon a place you make a quick judgement by the building facade. Near the crossroads of 7th Street and Southwest Boulevard in Rosedale you will find this uniquely designed eatery. When you first see Sabor Y Sol you would easily pass it off as a cheesy Mexican restaurant. You may question the quality of authenticity of the food, but you would be off target. This place has a look designed to attract attention, and a menu full of items designed to keep you coming back.
Every Mexican restaurant starts you with chips and salsa, but why not kick it up a notch and have their Guacamole Ranchero. Made fresh with avocado, tomato, onion, and spices, this appetizer really hits the spot. If you prefer you could pick a cheese sauce to accompany your chips or just share one of the nacho offerings. We are partial to tacos, and Sabor has a good variety. You can get the more traditional style served with pork, beef or chicken. Maybe you will want to sample the "street taco" version, which is becoming more popular around this region. Whichever style you pick, you will find them well proportioned, and not too salty.

If you are like us you prefer to order an entire meal, and then try your best to see how much you can finish. The prices at Sabor will allow for this without breaking the bank. Many of the dishes, like the Carnitas De Res, come with sides and condiments. It is clear that they do not want you to leave hungry. The service can be a little slow at times, but for the price it is easy to overlook. You won't find a packed house like they have in the Crossroads, but that makes it that much easier to find a table. This place doesn't have a website that I could find, but you seek out more information by looking them up on Yelp or Tripadviser. They do have a Facebook page if you want to do a search.

The restaurant is not large, but it does have a decent amount of indoor seating, as well as a small patio area. Of course, we don't go to a BBQ joint for the ambiance, we come for the food. Our signature way of determining the quality of any BBQ is to try the ribs. Of course, it also helps to test the burnt ends, so you can see how well the do other cuts. The meats have a good smoke, and are plenty tender. The smoking is obvious, as you can smell it as soon as you enter the restaurant.
They offer plenty of other meal options including the rarely found lamb ribs and fish. The menu lists appetizers and sides separately, but we often use them all for sides. There are a couple of salads and soups available, but we have never tried those. After all, we are talking about BBQ here. R.J.'s does offer sweet potato fries, which is something we have come to like better than standard ones, so that is a bonus.
Another bonus is that they offer breakfast on Saturday and Sundays. The menu actually is pretty robust for this meal, and offers a couple of dishes that include chorizo. Once again, not something found in most BBQ joints. I guess a lot of these menu anomalies can be traced back to the owners roots as a chef in the fine dining industry. The quality and consistency certainly are on the forefront at R.J.'s. This place is definitely worth adding to your BBQ Trail list, so make plans to give them a try. Many people around the metro enjoy the First Friday events in the Crossroads District. Here you can find almost every kind of entertainment and artistic venue possible. For us it also gives the opportunity to partake in foods and treats not usually in our weekly menu. The problem can actually be determining which treat we want to savor on a particular month. Fortunately, we can always fall back on a tried-and-true delight by visiting Christopher Elbow Chocolates. In a non-distinct building the staff churn out some of the most delectable treats.
Upon entering the store one faces a bounty of treats that are as pleasing to the eyes as they are to the palate. Here you will be tempted by truffles with many flavor combinations, as well as chocolate bars, nuts, and my favorite, toffee. Now as we said, this is not a regular occurrence for us, so we feel safe partaking on the times we do get to stop by. The best part of First Fridays is that they run a special on their truffles.
We have developed a routine that helps insure our success at this location, but I'm afraid I cannot share it with you without compromising our victory. I mean we have to keep some secrets as closely guarded as the recipe for Coca-Cola or KFC chicken. I will hint at the need to alter your dining time to earlier in the evening, which should put you in line with plenty of time to find all of the best flavors still in stock. We hope you get a chance to indulge in these fantastic treats in the very near future. I will say something that may not be well taken, but not all BBQ is created equally. We have tried a wide range of places, and always look for that special dish that each one holds up above the others. At some locations it may be the ribs, while others may have awesome brisket. Quite a few have exceptional burnt ends, but almost all have one thing in common, they are not corporate barbecue.
Famous Dave's has a huge following, which is obvious from the fact that they have multiple locations in 32 states, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico. Now you must be doing something right to create a BBQ empire that large. The food they serve is very reminiscent of good barbecue, but somewhere along the way they have become the epitome of big business barbecue.

This is the perfect recipe to sell barbecue to folks in Washington or Maine, but what about here in the BBQ capitol of the world. Our general take on the food is that it is what you would expect from a regular restaurant trying to up-sell barbecue menu items. While the food has decent flavor, and the menu is teeming with unique items, the prices are high even for the costly BBQ category. Of course, a keen eye will pick out a decent deal at most any location. The 6 Bones Meal will set you back about $17.00, while the Feast for One pictured above sells for about $19.00, but is enough food for two.

One area we find appealing is the variety of sauces they offer. With a range from sweet to spicy most anyone can find a flavor that fits the bill. Feel free to kick your meal up a notch with the Devil Spit sauce. All in all we find Famous Dave's to be an okay experience, but not one we would drive out of our way to enjoy. It's more the kind of place that is convenient when you are in the area and need a barbecue food fix. We enjoy quiet afternoons in Parkville, Mo. The downtown area is quaint, and the shops are meant to be viewed at a leisurely pace. We seem attracted to the small business atmosphere that envelopes these couple of blocks. Of course after some retail therapy we have worked up an appetite. No problem, as we can just duck into Stone Canyon Pizza for a bite to eat.
Of course the offerings don't end at pizza. They also have a menu full of pastas, salads, and sandwiches. They run specials on certain days of the week, as well as hosting a Happy Hour on Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:00. If you are in the area during the week you can also catch a lunch special. It has been said that the secret to success is doing one thing, and doing it right. At Raising Cane's the one thing is chicken strips, and this chain restaurant seems to be wildly successful. Now when we left on our recent adventure through the metro we had no idea this place even existed, let alone that there were three locations in our city. We chose to head to Blue Springs, since it is not usually on our target list of areas to visit. Being a holiday weekend, we found ourselves with some spare time, and decided to venture out. When it came time for lunch we were faced with the standard fast food type offerings. Since Raising Cane's was unfamiliar to us, it obviously got the nod.
The store is set up like most any other fast food restaurant, but this one was teeming with customers. I consider this a positive, since it means that some of the people are probably return customers. The menu is very simple. They serve chicken strips. Of course nothing is that simple. You have to choose either a 3, 4 or 6 strip meal or you could opt for a chicken strip sandwich.
The meals come with crinkle cut fries, a slice of Texas toast, and some of their signature dipping sauce. The fries are fries, so enough said. The toast has a garlic undertone, which I found to be good without being overwhelming. The dipping sauce has decent flavor, but I am not one to regularly use a sauce. The chicken strip were all white meat, and had good flavor. The crust on the strips was not spicy, and stayed with the strip. Overall the food was pretty good for a fast food joint. Being a southern style food place I was hoping that they would offer sweet tea, and I was not disappointed. It was certainly a refreshing way to wash down my meal. Since we already visited one of the top fish restaurants in KCK this week, we might as well hit up another one. Mad Jack's Fresh Fish is a little different from others, as they offer fresh fish you can take home to cook. They have about a dozen varieties of fish, and also a few shellfish items. They sell some breaded items for folks to take home and fry up, as well. They have there own breading mix, and assorted seasonings and boils, for those that prefer to do the whole job themselves. Here you can get all the fixings for your next homemade fish dinner.
Okay, I got that part out of the way, so now we can move on to the reason most people come to Mad Jack's, the already prepared food. The menu is built around four main ways you can order your meal. You can order a half pound or a full pound of the entree, which include items like basa, tilapia, catfish, walleye or even frog legs. You can have your entree combined with fries, bread and hot sauce or cole slaw and potato salad. Of course that is a fairly light overview of the menu, as they have plenty of other sides, mains, and even desserts. You can even mix and match some of the sides, although if you get too crazy there may be a slight up-charge.

The fish is well flavored, and crispy good. I have on occasion tried about four of the varieties, and all have been delicious. The fries are standard thick cut, and hold up well. The potato salad and cole slaw are run of the mill, but make decent sides. If you order the bread and hot sauce version, it tastes like Wonder white bread, and the hot sauce is very much like Frank's. Overall these are passable, but the main reason to visit is for the fish. Mad Jack's is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm. On Sunday they are open from Noon until 6:00 pm. Every once in a while when a new restaurant opens they will quickly develop an almost fanatical following. To achieve this feat requires them to offer a superior product or service to their customers. It is almost magical to watch this process, since it only happens on rare occasions. This is exactly what happened with SLAP's BBQ. Brothers Mike and Joe Pearce began the restaurant after years on the barbecue competition circuit. Their team name is Squeal Like A Pig, from which S.L.A.P.'s derived. These two have won numerous competitions, and still compete in 25 or more events annually. They do this to help keep their skills honed.
The old saying "The proof is in the pudding" could be altered to say in the smoke. These guys have got their barbecue skills down to an art form, and serve it up Monday through Saturday starting at 11:00 in the morning. Their hours are listed as being open until 7:00, but they usually sell out long before that. Fortunately, they have added the feature to pre-order, so you can be sure to get some of this deliciousness.
Besides the normal offerings, SLAP's serves up turkey, brisket, pork, sausage, and burnt ends by the pound. They offer a handful of side dishes, which include baked beans made with their sauce, as well as a delicious version of cheesy corn. Located at 553 Central Avenue, in the heart of KCK, SLAP's BBQ strives to make the best product they can provide every day. Be sure to make plans to try them out, but you may want to pre-order for piece of mind.
